Update on Chris July 4

Chris' oncologist, Dr. Mennel, had a meeting with Chris and Mandy yesterday evening. He was very compassionate, but told them that they have done all that they can do, and unless Chris' platelet count rises to at least 100,000, no more treatments will be given to Chris.

Chris kept asking if he could go home and the doctor explained that he wasn't well enough to simply go home, but he would consider releasing Chris from the hospital if he went home with hospice care. However, to obtain hospice care, a Do Not Resuscitate order must be signed by Chris. At this point, Mandy said, Chris is not ready to sign that form. She said that they have spent an agonizing two days with this, and other decisions that need to be made. If Chris does sign the DNR order and as soon as the paperwork is filed and hospice is all set up, he will come home and the hospice nurses will come in during the day and will keep him as comfortable as they can with a pain management plan. If he chooses not to sign the order, then he will remain in the hospital. The entire family is reeling right now. Mandy said that for anyone who has left her messages, she will return all calls as soon as she can, but probably not for the next day or two.

I just wanted to let you all know.

Kathie
